• What Is the difference between gap filling and strip filling?

  Gap filling is part of our wood floor restoration services. It is common for gaps to appear between the floorboards or between the parquet blocks over time. The smaller gaps are relatively easy to ractify by the gap filling service, where a mixture of clear resin and saw dust, which is collected from the sanding process is used to fill in the gaps. Nevertheless, it should be noted that bigger gaps are trickier to fill. This is where strip filling comes to help.

  Strip filling uses small pine slivers between the floorboards and goes together with resin & saw dust filler. While this is often an effective method, it is not ideal solution for larger areas as it can spoil the look of the timber floors.

  Important note for both gap filling methods is that they are dependant on the solidness of the floorboards. Stability of both depends on absence of movement in the floorboards or in the joists that hold the floorboards. Therefore, gap filling for floorboards is excluded from the service guarantee of flooring companies.

• What can go wrong with DIY floor sanding?

  Hi,

  Doing floor restoration yourself might be a tricky thing to do unless you have some sanding experience and knowledge. Floor sanding requires particular skills which can only be obtained through experience. One particular thing that you need to be aware of is the technique of proper allication of the wood floor finish. Once floors are sanded to a smooth finish, carefully apply the first coat of varnish, allowing sufficient time for it to dry before the next application of the following coat. Sometimes, when when the floor surface was not perfectly smooth and clean before the application of varnish or in cases where the existing sealant has not been entirely removed, blobs can appear after the sanding. This might be a very expensive thing to ractify as it would require an entire re-sanding and re-varnishing of the floors. Bear in mind that if your parquet flooring has already been sanded in the past, there might be a limited opportunity to re-sand agai, which may mean that an overall replacement of the flooring might be required.

• Can you recommend hardwax-oil product for re-oiling?

  Hi James, the right product for regular recoating is maintence oil, which contains less solids than regular hardwax-oil products and therefore is easier to work with. However, re-oiling with normal hardwax-oil is absolutely fine and most popular and easy to work with products on the market are Osmo Polyx and Bona Hardwax-Oil.

  Bare in mind these are slow drying sealants (4-8 hours). Osmo offers a quicker drying version - couple of hours quicker, Osmo Polyx Rapid.

  In most cases when floor repairs are required we can supply parquet flooring blocks, solid wood planks, or engineered wood planks that are the same age and style to your existing floor. In cases where exact matches are not available, we may produce custom planks or blocks from the same timber material to match the existing flooring.

  If we cannot find the same product or material, we can supply the closest timber and do a close colour match with floor staining.
