• Is it possible to sand and oil my 3-strip engineered wood flooring?

  Hi and thank you for contacting us regarding sanding, staining and re-oiling your 3-strip engineered wood flooring.

  The 3-strip engineered floorings come with 3 mm top layer of solid wood, which means that they can be sanded only once. So, the first thing that you need to do is make sure that your flooring has never been sanded before.

  Given that your floors would allow for another sanding, it is perfectly possible to change the colour of the natural oak by using coloured oils. A huge variety of colours are available from the Osmo Oils range, which we highly recommend and which we regularly use for our restoration of oiled floors services.

• Can I seal domestic wooden floors with commercial grade floor lacquer?

  Hi and thank you for your question about the use of commercial grade floor lacquer or oil in domestic properties. The quick answer is yes. However, there are several things you need to consider when choosing the most appropriate floor sealant for your floors.

  Once the floors are properly sanded to a smooth finish, it is extremely important that lacquer is applied right away to ensure that the bare timber is protected from any accidental spillages. Choosing the best type of sealant requires not only consideration of how the floors are expected to be used, but also how often you will be bale to maintain them in the future. While lacquers provide a more durable and hard wearing sealant, it is important to note that they do not allow for local scratch repairs and once floors are damaged, they would need a total resanding and revarnishing. Therefore, some customers prefer the use of wood floor oils, such as Osmo Oils to seal their floors. While oiled floors allow some minor floor scratches to be repaired and reoiled locally, without the need of overall sanding, it is important to note that they do require a regular wood floor re-oiling service to maintain the sealant.

  Should you decide to go for a lacquer rather than oil, we would recommend the commercial grades of some renown varnish producers such as Loba Varnishes, Bona Lacquers and Junckers sealants, which we regularly use for our floor restoration services as they provide high level of protection and durability.

• What does polish mean and can it be done on engineered flooring?

  Hi and thank you for contacting us with your question about cleaning and polishing of engineered wood floors.

  The first thing that you need to be aware of is that cleaning and polishing service is not applicable for floors which are badly damaged and where the existing sealant has worn out. It is rather a service that is performed on wooden floors which are ina relatively good condition without any parches that do not have any sealant left and is merely done to provide an exrea coat and extra protection to the existing sealant. By doing this, cleaning and polishing can prolong the life of varnished floors before they need to be sanded and revarnished. Cleaning and poslishing can be done on any wooden floors which have been sealed with varnishi, including engineered wood flooring, parquet flooring and any solid wood floorings.

  Having said that, if the sealant on your floors has already worn out, then cleanign and polishing will not be possible and in this case a torough sanding and revarnishing will be required in order to completely remove the existing sealant and to apply new varnish on top of the sanded floros. 

And Some Frequently Asked Questions...

• Can you supply matching flooring for floor repairs?

  In most cases when floor repairs are required we can supply parquet flooring blocks, solid wood planks, or engineered wood planks that are the same age and style to your existing floor. In cases where exact matches are not available, we may produce custom planks or blocks from the same timber material to match the existing flooring.

  If we cannot find the same product or material, we can supply the closest timber and do a close colour match with floor staining.

• Do you do re-oiling of wooden floors?

  Yes. We provide re-oiling / re-waxing services for wooden floors, with original oil-based finish.

  We can also offer a site visit to assess if the conditions of the flooring are applicable for a re-oiling service, or if floor sanding and refinishing will be required instead.

  Please be prepared with some photos as well, showing the condition of the floors.

• How long does it take before the floors can be used again after sanding service?

  During the restoration service, the floors can handle light traffic without disrupting the process.

  During the sealing process, the floors can be walked on between coats.

  After the final coat is applied, foot traffic can be handled after 2 hours for lacquered floors and (depending on air humidity / season) 5-8 hours for hardwax-oil.

  Furniture should go back in place on the following day.
